I need to get a tuxedo tailored because weddings and I'm now fattier than I was 4 years ago so my current one isn't looking all that good, so Oppo, white jacket, black pants and red bow tie or normal black tux?

Classic tux. If you are spending the money you should get the most utility.

Exactly, black. And check out Men's Wearhouse or whatever is near you. Back in the 90s I bought a designer tux for $250 and have saved thousands on rentals since then. Curved lapels too - they never seem to go out of fashion.

Get a traditional solid color tuxedo in either black or midnight blue and get a tie it yourself black bowtie. Keep it slim with normal width lapels. You want to stand out due to the quality of the tailoring rather than garish accessories.

Just get a black tux, you're not going to enjoy the fake james bond thing the entire night. Save yourself the hassle get a normal black tux and if you simply MUST get fancy about something get a uniquely colored bowtie and pair it with uniquely colored socks. Subtlety goes a lot further than cliche.

Standing-out just a little bit is important haha, but you are right subtlety is key.

Tailoring would be of quality, I have a good tailor and he imports all the fabrics. But I really wanted to own a white jacketed tux, such class.

You're going to get more wear-time out of the classic black tux. You can still do the red bow tie, or any bow tie, or a snazzy vest. Having those little details will give you the same pop of the white jacket, while looking like someone from this era.

Always classic black. This website is an excellent guide for tuxes etc. . .

White dinner jackets are meant for the summer season. Another consideration is that it is often not appropriate to wear one to a wedding where it is a guest's responsibility to wear something as conservative or more conservative than the groom.

Black. You'll get much more use out of it than a dinner jacket. Then you can wear whichever tie you like. You could also wear a long black tie with it. OR, you could get a black suit that will work either as a suit or a tux. I'm a musician, and I wear a tux regularly. I own one, but I usually wear a black suit and bow tie with a dress shirt (not a tux shirt). I sit in the back of the orchestra, though, so I can get a way with it.

A white dinner jacket is only appropriate in warm weather, as it will keep you cooler than a traditional dark tux. Otherwise, go black or midnight blue, which actually looks blacker than black in low light.

Also a good point. It's rare to find a wedding where that level of dress code is required anymore.
I was in at wedding this past weekend where the grooms only did dress shirts and bowties, and my +1 had a suit jacket on and almost looked overdressed.

It is summer here, one of the reasons the white one is an option, but black is just classier.

I'd never wear a tux shirt, too flamboyant.

You can always pick up a white jacket on it's own if you really want one. They just seem very outdated anymore.

Sure, I'm no looker and I'm out of shape, but if done correctly it looks good I think.

In the most formal situation, it's still okay. But the little wing-collared shirt is pretty out of date now.

I've always been a fan of the dinner jacket, but you might be right about the black.
Weddings also have their own weird rules about not upstaging/drawing attention from the wedding party, so if everyone else is going with a matching jacket, you don't necessarily want to stand out that way.

While I agree, they are also celebrities, probably at either a premier or an awards show. I would bet that wearing that to 98% of weddings would probably be very overdressed. And while it's true you want to be overdressed rather than under, you also don't want to be very overdressed. Especially compared to what the groom will be wearing. Women don't wear white to overshadow the bride, men shouldn't be way more formal than the groom.

And like I said, if you have something come up where it's needed, just getting a white jacket on it's own shouldn't be that hard.

Midnight blue tux (looks black). Good quality ones aren't cheap but you don't have to go all the way to a name Italian brand if you don't want to. Keep things relatively traditional. If you want to mix it up, I find the following to be of use in black tie situations (in approximately this order), and the good news is that you don't have to match the fabric exactly:
1. Black velvet jacket.
2. White (actually cream) tux jacket. (Mine is peak lapel, but I love the shawl look on cream jackets.)
3. Other velvet jackets. My current ones are emerald green and purple.
4. Smoking jacket. Good for putting on when folks come over to your place after a black tie event.
Obviously having a real bow tie and not a clip-on is mandatory. I keep mine white and black personally but jazzing it up with color could be good at the right event.
I don't care for ruffled tux shirts. Armani makes some nice ones that have a covered placket but don't have ruffles or require those fiddly buttons.
Lots of fun can be had with cuff links.

You and I share a similar style then.
As I'm currently living in Brazil and garden parties are common, I tend to go with lighter colors, even in evening events a cream jacket is almost mandatory for me.
I normally have my tailor import all the fabric from Italy but I guess I could look at some italian brands directly. Black velvet is a good idea, the only velvet jacket I got is dark blue/almost purple.
Now, how do you like your smoking jacket? I've been meaning to get one, but my dressing gown serves that same purpose (albeit being a little bit tacky).

It's fun to bust out the smoking jacket when you bring people back to your place after a party. (Also the ladies like to be handed it if they are chilly in my experience.) I think it looks great with an untied bow tie.
Forgot to mention: cumberbund = no. That screams old guy to me. Don't know why.

Cummerbunds are one of those things I would never wear, together with clip-on ties, ruffled shirts, monk-strap shoes (I have no idea why I hate them), or any sort of hat that isn't a Panama.
A smoking jacket would indeed be more practical than my dressing gown, but that cashmere is unbeatable. Thanks!

Nothing. You don't need to cover it.
